RealSports Football ?-??-81
Rob Zdybel mentioned producing this demo in response to being
asked to do a new football game for the 2600 (which would
eventually become RS Football). According to Rob the
purpose of this demo was to show marketing the limits of what
the 2600 could do (as he put it "literally pegging the
machine").
The demo shows eleven men on each side of the screen running
in place. There are also two lines representing yardage
markers, and that's about the extend of the demo. There is
no other functionality, it was simply made to show what the 2600
could (and couldn't) do. If you look at the two pictures
below, you can see that the multi-colored players had to
replaced by solid colors in order to make the game feasible.
Since the prototype was discovered in the early 2000's, it was
assumed that Tod Frye programmed this demo as he mentions
creating something called "Red vs Blue" in the Stella at 20
documentary. However in a recent interview Rob mentioned
that programmed it himself and never mentions the demo being
called Red vs Blue, so it's possible that different football
demo exists somewhere or Tod had his facts wrong. Either
way, this early demo paved the way for RS Football.
Impressive for a demo
