Star Wars: The Arcade Game 12/05/83
This version is a very early demo of the trench screen.
You can move around the trench and shoot , but the
crosshairs themselves do not move yet. The two large
blocks are placeholders for the fireballs which will appear in
the same spot in later versions. The color scheme is a
little odd with yellow used instead of red, this may just be a
error in the color code. Your lasers are very strange
looking in the prototype and appear as angled lines that quickly
move up the sides of the screen (since you can't move the
crosshair yet). The movement of the trench walls when
changing positions is slower than in the next prototype
(12/15). Also note that the design of the cannons is
different, this design (which looks more like they do in the
movie) would last all the way up to WIP 11.
It appears that the programmers were trying to figure out
whether to have the controls be inverted or not. In this
prototype the controls are inverted (up makes your ship go down
and down make it go up), but in the next prototype (12/15/83)
the controls are not inverted. By the following prototype
(12/23/83) the controls were put back to being inverted before
changing back to non-inverted controls in the 1/3/83
prototype. After the WIP 11 prototype the controls would
be inverted again and would remain inverted in the released
game.
Whoa! Funky colors!
