Centipede
Original System: N/A
The original Centipede was programmed by Dave Getreu for the
Atari 400/800 and was released in early 1982. Atari decided
that this version wasn't flashy enough for their new 'Personal
Arcade Machine' and had Frank Hausman and Sean Hennessy
program a new version which was much closer to the arcade
game. The Atari 5200 version has better graphics
than the Atari 400/800 version and supports the 5200
trackball.
It was long thought that the Atari 5200 version of
Centipede was never ported back to the Atari 400/800, but
recently it was discovered that this version did appear on a
budget game compilation tape released by Atari U.K. (making it
the first time this version was released in Europe). In an
odd twist however it would appear that this version was not an
official port by Atari but rather the unofficial port done by
the infamous Glenn the 5200 Man. Glenn was a prolific
hacker who unofficially ported many Atari 5200 games to the
Atari 400/800 back in the day. How one of his ports ended
up on an official Atari compilation tape is a mystery.
