Joust
Original System: Atari 5200
Programmed by GCC, the Atari 5200 version of Joust really
stands out on the system and plays very close to the arcade
version. The Atari 400/800 and 5200 ports are almost exactly
the same with two small differences. First the player's life
icons face to the left in the 5200 while they face to the right in
the 400/800 port. Also, in the Atari 5200 version the player
cannot move until they have finished re-materializing after being
killed (they can push the fire button to move immediately though),
but they can in the Atari 400/800 version. It's unknown why
the Atari 5200 version has these minor differences.
Interestingly a late stage WIP prototype for the Atari 5200
version recently surfaced that not only has the lives icons
pointing the correct way but also allows movement when
re-materializing just like in the Atari 400/800 version. It
is thought that the Atari 400/800 port is actually based on this
late WIP instead of the final 5200 version.
