Expander 1

The Expander 1 unit was an interface that allowed the VideoBrain to connect to cassette recorders, printers, and modems, similar to the Atari 850 interface.  The Expander 1 two sets of audio ports for playback and recording, and two RS-232 ports on the back for connecting a printer and the Expander 2 Acoustic Modem.  All in all, the Expander 1 is a useful little unit.

Several VideoBrain programs made use of the Expander 1, including APL/S, Money Minder, Timeshare, and Information Manager.  The unit interfaced with the VideoBrain via a plug in the back of the unit.  It is unknown how many Expander 1 units were produced, but the two that have surfaced have incredibly low serial numbers (29 and 73!).

It appears that the Expander 1 underwent a cosmetic change later in lifespan.  Recently a unit with the serial number 868 appeared on ebay with a black front panel with slightly different text placement for the ports.  It is now assumed that at least 1,000 Expander 1 units were made, although very few have surfaced.
